A fun outing turned into tragedy on Saturday, for a group of college students from Karnataka.

News agency ANI reported that eight students from a college in Belagavi drowned to death at a beach in Maharashtra on Saturday afternoon.

According to reports, 40 students of Maratha Engineering College in Belagavi had gone to Maharashtra on a tour and were at Wairi beach in Sindhudurg district when the incident occurred.

Sindhudurg SP Amogh Goankar told The News Minute that of the eight people whose bodies were recovered, one of them is that of a teacher.

"Bodies of 7 students and a male teacher have been recovered from the sea. Of this, three were women students and the rest were men. The students are all aged between 22-23 years," the SP said.

Six others have been rescued so far and have been shifted to a nearby hospital. The condition of one of the rescued students is critical, the SP added.

The officer said that rescue operations were still on.

Media reports indicate that the students had arrived in Sindhudurg on Saturday morning.

IANS reported that the students, allegedly ignoring warnings by locals of strong currents, ventured into the sea and were soon washed away into deep waters.
