After 11 fruitless days for India at the Rio Olympics, wrestler Sakshi Malik finally broke the medal jinx by winning the country’s first medal - a bronze in Women’s Freestyle 58 kg category.

Here are a few things to know about Sakshi.

1. She was born on September 3, 1992 and hails from Rohtak district in Haryana.

2. Took up wrestling as a 12-year-old under coach Ishwar Dahiya. Faced a lot of resistance from locals when she took up the sport. 

3.  Qualified for Rio by winning bronze in the Olympic qualifiers, after beating former world champion Chinese Lan Zhang in Istanbul.

4. Previous achievements include Bronze in Doha Asian Championships 2015, Silver in Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014.

5. She is the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal.
