Five construction workers who were working on the TRS government’s double bedroom housing project lost their lives after they fell off scaffolding on the tenth floor and lost their lives. The incident took place in the Rampally village in Telangana’s Keesara mandal. Two other people have reportedly sustained injuries.

The workers had been fitting a safety net and did not have a harness when they fell from the tenth floor.

As per several reports, workers said that enough importance had not been given to safety measures, and demanded an investigation be conducted. The deceased have been identified as Shibel Roy (33), Saif-ul-Haq (21), Abhijit Roy (18), Milan Sheik (20) and Yash Kumar (20). All are natives of West Bengal, apart from Yash, who is a native of Jharkhand.

The victims reportedly were not given any safety gear to wear while they were working. The men had all migrated to Hyderabad. Their bodies were shifted to Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad for post-mortem.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) had proposed the double bedroom scheme for people in rural and urban areas across the state. Roughly 2.6 lakh houses are to be built under the scheme, with each Assembly constituency promised to receive 1,400 houses.

Though initially proposed in 2014, it was only in 2015 that KCR granted pattas for the land on which the houses were to be built to 10,300 families. The houses were planned to be built with 2 bedrooms, a living area, kitchen and two toilet facilities.
