Former CM and JD(S) state chief HD Kumaraswamy filed his nomination papers on Friday from two seats— Ramanagara and Channapatna in Ramanagara district- for the May 12 polls.

Kumaraswamy is a three-time MLA (also current) from Ramanagara. Incidentally, his wife Anitha had lost the elections from Channapatna in 2013.  In Channapatna, he faces a tough fight against the current Transport Minister and Congress leader HM Revanna and BJP's CP Yogeshwar, a two-time MLA.

Drop in wealth

According to his election affidavit, the 59-year-old second generation politician has disclosed an annual income of close to Rs 44 lakh, while his wife has earned a little more than Rs 1 crore 8 lakh (Rs 1,08,24,600).

He has identified himself as an agriculturalist and a public servant.

Kumaraswamy has said while his regular income was Rs 3,26,030 (more than Rs 3 lakh), his agricultural income was Rs 41,63,000.

He has announced that he has Rs 12,14,216 (12 lakhs) cash in hand, while his spouse Anitha has Rs 42, 36,648 (42 lakhs).

Kumaraswamy has also declared little less than Rs 8 crore in total moveable assets ( Rs 7,80,90,560) and Anitha has six lakhs short of a crore in moveable assets. (Rs 94,22,91,877).

While Kumaraswamy has listed the total worth of his immovable assets including agricultural land as Rs 35 crore (Rs 35,10,26,000), his wife’s immovable assets amount to a total of Rs 30 crore. (Rs 30,00,00,000)  This adds up to a total sum of Rs 74 crore.

He had listed Rs 26.49 crore of immovable assets, and Rs 2.56 crore of immovable assets, Rs 12.87 crore of immovable assets and Rs 107.83 crore of immovable assets were listed in his wife’s name.

The former CM also has liabilities in the form of loans. While Kumaraswamy has a loan of Rs 2, 94,75,198 (less than Rs 3 crore), his wife owes a little more than Rs 8 crore to banks/ financial institutions (Rs 8,12,68,685).

Criminal cases

Kumaraswamy is being tried at the Additional City and Sessions Judge Court under sections of 13(1)(c) and 13(1)(d) read (misappropriation of public property/ abuse of power) with 13(2) Prevention of Corruption Act (public servant who commits criminal misconduct)  and under section 465 (punishment for forgery) of IPC.

Other than this, there are cases where he is being investigated by the Lokayukta or a Special  Investigation Team as directed by the apex court. These include those relating to offences relating to mining lease, denotification of land and also forest land violations.
