Bengaluru residents allegedly beat up a 30-year-old Ivory-Coast man on Sunday. They suspected him to be a thief because he allegedly tried to enter someone’s house.

Bangalore Mirror reported that the man, who is a resident of BTM Layout was inebriated on the night of the incident.

According to Bosco Kaweesi, the legal advisor to African students in Bengaluru, the man is an Ivory-Coast national.

Police said, Caulibaly alias Alex, is pursuing a computer course and has been staying in Bengaluru for the past one and a half years

On Sunday night at round 11 pm, residents saw Alex in Hennur Bande area and questioned him as to what he was doing there. When he did not answer, the locals beat him up before calling the police, reported The Times of India.

The residents claimed that they beat him after recent cases where two African students were arrested for stealing fuel from bikes and setting fire to it.

The police, on arrival, found Alex injured and took him to a private hospital in Banaswadi for treatment.

“When we rushed to the hospital, Alex said that he was assaulted by the locals. When we enquired more about him, he couldn't answer anything as he was intoxicated. We will continue our investigation as soon as he is able to talk to us and explain what happened exactly,” said police adding that the doctors said Alex was drugged.

“When we asked him on Monday morning what exactly had happened, he was not aware of what had happened the previous night. He said he did not remember anything. But we will investigate who beat him up,” said the police.
