Three persons were killed and 30 people were injured on Monday in Kerala after a Kerala Road Transport Corporation (KRTC) bus collided with a truck.

Talking to TNM, the Kottiyam Circle Inspector said the incident took place around 6:30 am on Monday near the Ithikkara bridge, when the Kerala RTC bus travelling from Mananthavady to Thiruvananthapuram collided with a truck travelling from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam.

“Three persons have died and around 30 people have been injured in the accident,” the Kottiyam CI told TNM.

The injured were immediately rushed to the Kollam District Hospital, Kottiyam Holy Cross Hospital and the KIMS Hospital.

“The three persons who died have been identified as Ganesh, who was the truck driver, Kerala RTC driver Abdul Azees and the conductor of the bus, TP Subhash,” said the CI.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, the state Transport Minister AK Saseedharan, Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty Amma and Kerala RTC managing director Tomin J Thachankary have visited the accident victims in hospital.

According to Kerala Police statistics, the number of road accidents Kerala has seen until June 30, 2018, is 20,700 and the number of deaths recorded is 2,249.

In 2017, statistics show, 1,164 accidents took place involving Kerala RTC buses which killed a total of 213 persons and injuring 1,229 persons.

A total of 2,189 accidents involving trucks were recorded, killing 491 people and injuring 2,295 people.
