A 25-year-old women was allegedly burnt alive with petrol by unidentified persons in Kothapalli area of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.

The incident reportedly happened on Friday morning, in 65 division, Kothapalli of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. The area falls under Pondurthi police limits.

Locals in the area on suspecting that the body had been burnt, informed the police.

Police rushed to the spot but were unable to identify the body as it was charred beyond recognition. The body has been shifted to the government mortuary for post-mortem.

Police have started the investigation, and a case of suspicious death has been registered. Police clues team and sniffer dogs were brought in to speed up the investigation.

Speaking to TNM, T Ravi Kumar Murthy DCP (L&O) said, "We are still probing, the case is being investigated from all possible angles."

When asked if the victim had been identified, he replied in the negative adding, "All the necessary measures are being taken, CCTV footage is being examined and suspect tracking is also ongoing.”

Police are also verifying recent cases of missing women in the area.

As per Telugu media reports, it is not clear if the woman was burnt alive at the spot or killed somewhere else and then set ablaze at an isolated area in Kothapalli.

Andhra has already witnessed protests for two days over the rape of a minor in Guntur district.
