The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which manages the affairs of the Sri Venkateswara temple atop Tirumala, is following in the footsteps of the Andhra Pradesh government, as it is looking to implement a proposal that guarantees 75% of jobs to local youth.
The trust board of the TTD has passed a resolution to this effect and forwarded it to the state government for its consideration and approval.
According to media reports, the reservation would be applicable to youth hailing from Chittoor district for jobs up to the scale of junior assistant.
Tirupati MLA B. Karunakar Reddy, who was a former chairman of the TTD and is a special invitee of the trust board at present, had put forward the proposal, which was accepted unanimously.
The TTD has around 8,000 permanent employees at present and several more employees hired on a contract or outsourcing basis, taking its total workforce strength to over 20,000 employees, reports added.
In July this year, the Andhra Pradesh government passed a Bill in the Legislative Assembly, aimed at providing 75% reservation for locals in industries and factories across the state.
The Andhra Pradesh Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries/ Factories Act, 2019, sought to reserve 75% of jobs for locals in all industries, including units, factories, joint ventures and projects set up under the public-private partnership model in the state.
"First preference would be the person who has lost his land due to the industry. Second preference would be to those in the vicinity of the factory, and even there if people are not found, then the state of Andhra Pradesh would be considered as local," Industries & Information Technology Minister Mekapati Goutham Reddy had said in a statement at the time.
Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy said that existing industries would get three years to provide 75% jobs to locals and assured them that the government will spend the money and work with the industry to train youth in the required skills.
