Heatwave alert in AP: Over 100 mandals to face extreme temperatures

Andhra Pradesh is set to face intense heatwave conditions over April 13 and 14, with over 100 mandals likely to be affected and temperatures already nearing 44°C.

Many parts of Andhra Pradesh are expected to witness severe heatwave conditions over the next two days, April 13 and 14, the AP State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) said.

According to APSDMA Managing Director Prakhar Jain, there is a possibility of severe heatwave conditions in 51 mandals and heatwave conditions in 49 mandals on April 13. On April 14, severe heatwave conditions are likely in 53 mandals, while 57 mandals may experience heatwave conditions.

He said that maximum temperatures are expected to be recorded in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, while hot winds are likely in north Andhra. People have been advised to take adequate precautions against the extreme heat.

On Monday, April 13, severe heatwave conditions are expected in several mandals across Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitharamaraju, Polavaram, Anakapalli, and Eluru districts. Heatwave conditions are also likely in parts of these districts, as well as in Kakinada, East Godavari, NTR, Palnadu, and Nandyal districts.

Earlier on April 12, Pottipadu in Kadapa district recorded the maximum temperature of 43.8°C followed by Varadayyapalem (43.1°C), Nandyal Rural (42.9°C), Terannapalle (42.3°C), Gudur (42.1°C), Durgi (41.8°C), Bukkapatnam (41.6°C), Anumalapalli and Kommipadu (41.2°C ), and Poduru (41.1°C).

The APSDMA has advised people to wear hats and light cotton clothing when stepping out, and to use sunglasses to protect their eyes. People have also been cautioned against exposure to hot winds. Those with heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure are advised to avoid going out in the sun. Authorities further recommend staying hydrated by drinking water, buttermilk, lemon juice, and coconut water.
