The Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (AP JUDA) will discontinue non-emergency services in government medical colleges on Wednesday, August 12, in protest against the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led state government. The announcement was made late on Monday, August 11, night after a meeting with the state Health Department.
The JUDA said its representatives had met the Andhra Pradesh Director of Medical Education (DME) and other officials to discuss their demands. However, the talks reportedly failed to yield a solution, prompting the doctors to continue their protest.
The AP JUDA has been protesting for the implementation of Government Order (GO) 287, issued in 2009. The GO allows for a biannual stipend revision of 15% in view of inflation. The protesters argue that the periodic enhancement of the stipend paid to postgraduate students and interns has been due for more than seven months.
The AP JUDA has also demanded that the biannual stipend hike be increased from 15% to 30%, citing rising inflation and workload. The government has instead proposed an annual hike of 3% for postgraduate students and 5% for interns.
The Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has extended its support to the AP JUDA.
