Priyanka Kanike, a 29-year-old woman who was injured in an accident in Rajahmundry on August 3, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, August 9. Police have arrested two men, Suravarapu Daswanth and Andrew Joseph Edwards, who were allegedly drunk and in the car that rammed into the scooter on which Priyanka and her friend, Umesh, were travelling.
The accident took place at the Prasaditya Mall on August 3 around 9.40 pm. East Godavari Superintendent of Police D Narasimha Kishore said that Umesh and Priyanka were leaving the mall after watching a movie, when the accused, Dushyanth and Joseph, had entered the mall for the next show.
The SP said the accused got into an argument during a security check and turned aggressive. Police had earlier said the mall security guards told them that the accused were denied entry as they seemed drunk.
They then tried to get away from the security personnel in a hurry by going down to the basement and leaving in their car, the SP said. CCTV footage showed them ramming into Priyanka and Umesh’s two-wheeler three times and driving over them before speeding away.
Based on Umesh’s statement, police said they initially booked the two accused for committing a rash and negligent act endangering the lives of others. Later the same day, the FIR was amended to charge them with attempting to commit culpable homicide after examining CCTV footage and other evidence. The case has reportedly been altered to causing death by negligence after Priyanka’s death.
The accused have been arrested and sent to judicial remand.
Priyanka and Umesh were students of GSL Medical College in Rajahmundry. Priyanka was a first-year PG student in Dermatology.
Her family had moved her to KIMS Hyderabad for better treatment, where doctors had earlier declared her brain dead. She had been placed on a ventilator for days before she passed away on August 9.
