Andhra Pradesh MLC Mayana Zakia Khanam resigned from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday, May 14. Khanam, who was also the Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council, resigned from her post as MLC too.

Andhra Pradesh BJP president and Rajahmundry MP Daggubati Purandeswari welcomed Zakia Khanam into the party with a saffron scarf.

Zakia Khanam, a prominent Muslim leader from Rayachoti in Annamayya district, was nominated as an MLC under the Governor’s quota in July 2020. She was later elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the Legislative Council.

She reportedly cited personal reasons for leaving the YSRCP. Zakia Khanam is the sixth MLC to have left YSRCP so far, since the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP coalition government came to power in 2024.

Previously, Karri Padma Sree, Pothula Suneetha, Jayamangala Venkataramana, Balli Kalyana Chakravarthy, and Marri Rajasekhar also quit YSRCP.
