Chennai Sanitation Workers protest: இரட்டை வேடம் போடும் DMK!| MK Stalin | Shabbir Ahmed | TNM Tamil
On August 15, Sanitation workers had conducted a rally with banners and chants of “Thank you” after Chief Minister MK Stalin announced six welfare schemes for them, including relief funds, self-employment assistance and a free breakfast programme. Headed by Minister Sekar Babu and Mayor R Priya, over 200 workers marched in celebration, with the minister and mayor serving them breakfast.
But this came after the day when the sanitation workers were arrested at midnight and forcefully dispersed by police while staging a protest. For 13 days, they had gathered outside the Greater Chennai Corporation’s Ripon Building, demanding that the government reverse its plan to privatise solid waste management.
The workers fear that privatisation will cut their wages, job security and leave them without basic protections.
In this week's episode of Yen Endra Kelvi, Shabbir Ahmed looks at the historic protest by sanitation workers, how the DMK government chose to handle it, and why this shows a failure in addressing their demands.
