Surviving a punishing Church: The story of Sr Ranit and Stand By Me

What does it cost a nun to speak out against a powerful bishop? For Sister Ranit, the fight meant a gruelling trial, isolation, and losing financial support. But she and two companion nuns have found a way forward through Stand By Me.

In 2018, Sister Ranit became the first Catholic nun in India to file a rape complaint against a bishop, accusing Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal of sexual assault. Franco was acquitted by the trial court in 2022. Sister Ranit’s appeal is pending before the Kerala High Court.

Isolated and left without financial support from the Church, Sister Ranit and her two companion nuns began rebuilding their lives through Stand By Me, a sewing enterprise supported by well-wishers.

The News Minute’s Maria Teresa Raju traces their journey from a historic protest, a gruelling trial, and the fight for survival that followed.
