Kochi has a frequent and active network of private city buses. However, commuters in the city also have to contend with the aggressive and reckless driving style of Kochi's private buses. Drivers hurry to reach their destinations at high speed, often without considering other vehicles on the road. Minor accidents and near-miss incidents have become very common on these roads.
Commuters in Kochi city complain about unnecessary honking, sudden overtaking, and minor accidents involving private buses, especially during peak hours.
According to a statement issued by the Kochi police, they registered 2,003 cases against bus crew members during inspections conducted between September 9 and 30. Among these, 130 cases were registered for competitive driving, and 71 involved dangerous or negligent driving.
Speaking to TNM, KM Siraj, Private Bus Owners Association, Ernakulam District secretary, said there is no system on our roads to maintain a safe distance between buses, two-wheelers, and cars. "Such systems may exist on national highways, but there is no such arrangement in cities," he added.
He also said, “If the workers are found guilty in the police’s current legal proceedings against them, we too will agree with and cooperate with those actions."
