In yet another shocking case from Tamil Nadu, a kidney sale racket has been unearthed, exposing how middlemen and private hospitals exploit the poor for illegal transplants.

Victims were approached with the promise of quick money, taken through fraudulent documentation, and operated on without proper medical or legal oversight. The role of two private hospitals is now under investigation.

In this week’s In Public Interest, TNM’s Senior News Editor Shabbir Ahmed speaks to Dr Shanthi, National Secretary of the Doctors Association for Social Equality, on how these organised networks continue to thrive despite regulatory mechanisms and why the poor are always the ones paying the price.
