The ongoing construction work for the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project (KLIP) in Telangana resulted in yet another accident for the third continuous day, injuring three people.

The accident occurred at the package 6 project site at Shayampet village in Peddapalli district on Friday.

The Times of India reported quoted irrigation officials as claiming that three persons were injured at an underground tunnel at Shayampet when a vehicle in which they were travelling at the site overturned.

"Two of three workers who jumped from the vehicle that overturned sustained fractures and were treated at a private hospital in Karimnagar," a senior official of irrigation department told ToI.

This comes one day after a migrant labourer lost his life on Thursday, due to alleged unsafe work conditions.

The victim, Devajit Sonowal (26) hailed from Assam and was working under a tunnel. He died on the spot after the roof collapsed, and a boulder fell on him, according to media reports.

On Wednesday, seven labourers working at the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project (KLIP) in Rajanna Siricilla district died after a tunnel they were working under, collapsed.

The tunnel roof collapsed when the labourers were working at the boomer machine. The air pockets burst causing the collapse of the granite roof weighing about four to five tons.

Taking the incidents into account, Deputy Labour Commissioner A Gandhi has said that the Labour Department will take action against the contractor executing the tunnel work.

Speaking to The Hindu, Gandhi said that the department found certain violations under the labour laws by the contractor and poor safety measures. He also said that they were ensuring that the contractor paid proper compensation to the deceased family members.

Earlier in the week, Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao visited the Thippapur site, and took stock of the situation and ordered for an inquiry, headed by Irrigation Department Special Chief Secretary SK Joshi.

Harish Rao announced that the project contractor would pay Rs 5 lakh ex gratia each to the kin of the deceased.

Chief minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao also expressed shock over the tunnel tragedy. He directed the officials to take measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Kaleshwaram is stated to be the costliest irrigation project taken up in the country with an estimated expenditure of Rs 80,500 crore.
