Telangana woman attacked by stalker sustains extensive burns, is critical

Doctors at Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad have stated that the 20-year-old girl who was the victim of an attack at the hands of her stalker is now critical after having sustained extensive burns. The incident took place in Warangal’s Nayeem Nagar on Wednesday.

The girl, identified as 20-year-old Ravali, was brought to the hospital on Wednesday at around 3:00 pm after having been set on fire by her classmate Anwesh who was stalking her and harassing her. Anwesh had stopped Ravali on Wednesday morning when she was on the way to college and asked her to marry him. When she refused, he poured petrol on her, which he had hidden in his bag, and set her on fire.

She was initially taken to MGM Hospital after which she was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Secunderabad at around 3:00 pm. Doctors who examined her noted that she had sustained grievous 3rd degree burns which affected around 70 percent of her body. Her face, chest, abdomen, both her upper limbs, back and thighs were all affected. Further, doctors noted that there was damage to her airway and lungs as a result of inhaling fumes which resulted in the development of laryngeal edema (excess fluid collection in the ‘voice box’).

“She has been intubated and put on ventilator. At present her BP and vitals are stable, however her condition is extremely critical. A multi-disciplinary team of Yashoda doctors consisting of Plastic Surgeon, Physician, Pulmonologist, Intensivist and Ophthalmologist Team Yashoda hospital are taking care utmost of the patient. She is at present in the Intensive care Unit, being monitored continuously,” reads the press statement issued by the hospital.

Intubation is a method by which an artificial tube is introduced into a person’s airway to help them breathe, when they are unable to do so on their own for any number of reasons.

Anwesh was apprehended by police and booked under sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 354 D (stalking) of IPC. According to the police, he’d been harassing her and asking her to marry him for several months now.
