A student of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani, studying in the Goa campus, allegedly killed himself in his hostel room on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as C Narsimha Reddy (21), a native of Sangareddy district in Telangana, who was a fourth-year computer science student at the institute.

Quoting sources, the Times of India reported that Reddy's parents had arrived in Goa on Sunday to meet him, and he was with them till midnight. As they left to board their flight, they called the deceased, and suspected something wrong when he did not pick up.

They rushed back and broke open the door, to find Reddy's hanging body.

The TOI report adds that after a post-morterm by officials, the parents left with the body for Hyderabad around 5pm.

Police are still trying to ascertain the reason for the student to take the extreme step.

According to data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in 2015, one student commits suicide in India every hour.

According to reports, 8,934 students killed themselves in 2015, while a staggering 39,775 students killed themselves in the five years leading up to it.

The number of attempted suicides is likely to be much higher, as many of them go unreported.

According to a Lancet report in 2012, India has one of the world’s highest suicide rates for youth aged 15 to 29. The main reasons are mental stress, unemployment, and the lack of a strong support system in the form of counsellors, therapists.
