Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Monday, September 12, directed Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar to alert Collectors and Superintendents of Police of all the Godavari river catchment area districts, including Kothagudem and Mulugu, following incessant heavy rains in the upper riparian region. An official release from KCR’s office said as the water flow in the Godavari has crossed nine lakh cusecs, the Chief Minister instructed the officials concerned to set up a control room in the secretariat and monitor the situation periodically. According to India Meteorological Department's weather bulletin, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at many places over Telangana, while heavy downpour is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Nirmal, and Nizamabad districts on Monday.

Telangana has seen heavy rains over the last three to four days. In some of the districts, villages were cut off as water was overflowing on the roads. In Rajannna Sircilla district, a woman named Gangu and her two-year-old grandson Kittu died after the car they were travelling in was washed away in an overflowing rivulet in Vemulawada Rural mandal. According to Eenadu, the woman had been taking her grandson from Jagtial to Hyderabad to meet his mother in Hyderabad when the mishap occurred. The car was retrieved with a crane and two other passengers in the car were rescued.

In another incident, a motorist who fell into the rainwater flowing at the Kolanupaka road culvert in the Nalgonda district was rescued by the Rachakonda Traffic Police. Around 4.30 pm on Sunday, a 30-year-old man named Srikanth slipped and fell into the flowing water with his bike, police said. Yadadri traffic police officials said they rescued him with the help of local residents. The road was closed with stoppers on either side as the water flow increased.

In Mancherial district, near Chennur, a bridge along the National Highway 63 caved in following heavy rains, after which the road was closed, disrupting traffic.

In another accident in Nirmal district, two persons were killed and one injured when a tree fell on a moving car. A group of people were going to visit the Kuntala waterfall when the incident occurred, in which the driver Buchirajam and a man named Ravi were killed, the Times of India reported.

Projects across the Godavari in Telangana have been receiving massive inflows. Authorities have opened 35 crest gates of Sri Ram Sagar to release water downstream. The flood discharge at Sri Ram Sagar is 2.06 lakh cusecs. As many as 85 gates of Yellampalli reservoir have been opened to let out 6.7 lakh cusecs. The flood discharge at Medigadda is 8.2 lakh cusecs. This is the second time in two months that the Godavari is witnessing floods. Unprecedented floods in July had caused widespread damage to crops.
