The Telangana government on Wednesday, March 19, allocated Rs 23,108 crore for the education department in the 2025-26 budget. Of the 3.04 lakh crores allocated for the state budget, 7.6% has been allocated for education.
In the budget speech, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka noted that out of 1023 government residential schools in the state, 662 do not have their own buildings and several gurukuls lack basic amenities. “To overcome this problem, the Congress government introduced Young India Integrated Residential Schools,” he said, announcing an amount of Rs 11,600 crores for establishing 58 Young India schools.
The Young India Integrated Residential Schools was announced in October 2024 with the Deputy CM stating that Rs 5000 crore would be spent towards its construction. The government’s stated aim with these schools is to bring together students from SC/ST/BC, minority and other communities under one roof and to provide ‘holistic development for students.’
The Deputy CM also announced that diet charges and cosmetic charges by 40% and 200% respectively have been increased in all gurukuls, welfare department hostels, and Kasturba Gandhi Girls' Schools in the state. “This increase has benefited 7.66 lakh students across Telangana. We have also launched the Common Diet Scheme to provide uniform meals to all students studying in welfare hostels across the state,” he added.
The education allocation accounts for 1.43% of the state’s total Gross State Domestic Product.
