The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) expelled its MLC, Mirza Rahmath Baig, from the party on August 28, Friday, asking him to immediately submit his resignation to the Chairman of the Legislative Council.

While the party’s official statement did not specify any reason for the expulsion, the announcement came just two days after Baig  approached the Cyber Crime police, alleging that some unidentified persons had been threatening to release purported deep fake visuals of him to extort money.

Meanwhile, unverified allegations against Baig have been circulating on social media, claiming that he had sexually assaulted a minor girl. Reports quoting police sources said they haven’t received any such complaint against Baig so far.

However, based on these allegations, leaders from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have sought further action against Baig from AIMIM.

BRS leader and former IPS officer RS Praveen Kumar said that AIMIM must help Baig’s alleged victims approach the police and help ensure justice.

BJP Telangana president N Ramchander Rao alleged that Baig was accused of sexual assault of a minor. “An inquiry should be conducted into all allegations against him and strict action should be taken against him,” he said.

Baig is yet to resign from the Legislative Council, to which he was elected in 2023 from the Hyderabad Local Authorities constituency.
