Hyderabad may be on the brink of another crisis as swine flu is back in the city after the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) reported double digit positive cases every day over the past week.

Over the past five days, 70 fresh H1N1 cases have been reported, including 22 positive cases on October 3 and 14 new cases on Thursday, a report in the Times of India adds.

"Unlike last year when cases peaked in November and December, the cases have gradually started increasing now. From an epidemic, the nature of H1N1 virus has now taken an endemic shape," Dr K Narasimhulu, professor of medicine at the state-run Gandhi Hospital told the newspaper.

The health department has also been warned by the Union health ministry with an advisory from Delhi, which has asked state governments to be on high alert and send a status report by October 10.

Various districts in the state have also started reporting cases with three cases from Nalgonda and one each from Warangal and Karimnagar districts on Thursday.

Telangana was one of the worst affected states last year, with over 220 swine flu positive cases and ten deaths in the first 20 days of 2015.

More than 75 people had succumbed to the H1N1 virus since January this year in the state.

Swine flu also known as the H1N1 virus spreads when you touch an infected surface or breathe cough and sneeze droplets in the air. The symptoms are the same as the seasonal flu -- cough, sore throat, and body aches. Young children, pregnant women, and older adults are more likely to develop complications.
