Protests over renaming domestic terminal at RGAI continue, 26 Congress activists arrested

The News Minute | November 25, 2014 | 7:20 am ISTThe protests over renaming the domestic terminal of the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad after N T Rama Rao continued on Monday with Congress activists staging protests.The police arrested 26 Congress activists after they staged a “Rasta Roko” and blocked the Hyderabad-Bangalore highway near the airport premises.The “Rasta Roko” began at 2:30 pm with a gathering of over 100 congress activists led by former MP Sarve Satyanarayana. The 26 who were arrested, were booked under section 151 of the CrPC and later released on personal bond.According to a report in the Times of India, the airport also saw heavy deployment of police personnel within the premises of the RGIA to ensure that no trouble broke out. Even the CRPF, in-charge of security at RGIA, was roped in to avoid any untoward incident.This incident comes to light after the Centre’s recent move to rename the domestic terminal at the Hyderabad airport after N T Rama Rao, ex chief minister of United Andhra and founder of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)Many pro Telangana leaders claimed that the terminal should be renamed after one of Telangana’s figures and not on an Andhra one.
