The News Minute | November 4, 2014 | 4:00 pm ISTThe state of Telangana has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chhattisgarh according to which the Latter will supply 1000MW of electricity to the former in the future.Telangana is experiencing a severe power shortage and can only supply 4,400 MW of electricity out of the 6,800 MW needed.This power deal was signed on Monday when the Telangana Chief Minister, K Chandrasekar Rao visited Chhattisgarh. But this however, is only the start. It could take up to 2 years or more for the actual transfer of power between the states.For electricity to be supplied, the states need to apply for the allotment of a power grid to the Power Grid Corporation.According to a report in The Hindu, no grid corridor is available as all the existing lines are already booked by Tamil Nadu through the recently laid Sholapur-Raichur line.The other option is to lay fresh lines. But, that would take roughly 18 months, official estimates say.So Telangana can only get a grid corridor after the power needs of Tamil Nadu are met and to add to the despair, it has also stopped power production on the left bank of the Srisailam plant as on Monday.For a state which is already facing a power crisis, the MoU is just a long term measure, whereas the situation is in dire need of a short term measure.
