BRS leader and daughter of former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) Kalvakuntla Kavitha alleged on Thursday, May 29, that repeated attempts were made to merge the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking to reporters at her residence in Hyderabad on the ongoing rift in the BRS, Kavitha, an MLC representing Nizamabad, said attempts were made to merge the BRS with BJP even when she was in jail for her alleged involvement in the Delhi liquor scam. Kavitha said that she had expressed her willingness to stay in jail for a longer period and was opposed to an alliance with BJP to save herself.

Kavitha accused some leaders within the BRS of trying to distance her from the party supremo KCR. She said these leaders were behind her defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when she contested from the Nizamabad Parliamentary seat.

Kavitha alleged that an attack against her was being waged against her on social media from handles operating outside the country and said that there was a need to expose those acting against the interests of the BRS.

Kavitha had recently alleged that a letter addressed by her to former CM KCR was leaked by insiders within the party. In her letter, Kavitha had expressed concern over the neglect of leaders and activists who played a pivotal role in the Telangana statehood agitation. She also strikingly criticised her father’s speech for not highlighting issues of the Backward Classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), and minorities — communities that form the backbone of the party’s support base.
