An MMTS engine caught fire at Hyderabad's Lingampally railway station on Tuesday, reportedly due to electrical defects.

The Times of India reported that the mishap occurred when the engine was being brought to the platform, and there were no passengers on board at the time of the fire.

However, the fire resulted in several trains being cancelled or delayed. 

“The 25 KW overhead catenary wire which supplies power to the engines was damaged which led to the fire accident. While the fire was brought under control almost immediately , with the power supply being cut off, few MMTS trains could not be operated. The exact reason of the accident is not known so far.An investigation will be conducted to ascertain the reason," M Umashankar Kumar, chief public relations officer, South Central Railway told ToI.

This came even as several trains were cancelled the previous day, due to heavy rain that lashed the city.

According to reports, the flooding was so heavy at Khairatabad MMTS railway station, that passengers were forced to wade through water to reach the platform.

On October 2, four MMTS trains were cancelled after heavy rains in Hyderabad and Secunderabad.

According to officials, some areas of the city recorded 7 cm to 12 cm rainfall on Monday. 

With water levels rising sharply at few places, some people left stranded in their cars had to be rescued.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) pressed its emergency teams into service to clear the roads by pumping out the flood water.

Many trains were also affected by the heavy downpour.

According to Hyderabad MeT office, the heavy downpour was caused by thunderstorm activity resulting from upper air circulation lying over Rayalaseema and upper air trough running from Odisha to Kerala across Telangana.
