Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Monday, September 28, said a nationwide movement against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, on the lines of the “Simon Go Back” agitation during India’s freedom struggle, was underway.
“There will be an ‘SIR Go Back’ against the ‘British’ (Bharatiya) Janata Party on the lines of the ‘Simon Go Back’ agitation launched against the British during India’s freedom struggle,” Revanth said, while speaking at the Conclave 2026 in New Delhi.
He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Union government of using the Election Commission in the same way the British used the Simon Commission to undermine Indians’ rights, particularly their right to vote.
The Simon Commission was opposed by Indian political parties and groups because the all-British commission, appointed in 1927 to examine constitutional reforms in British India, did not have any Indian members.
Revanth said opposition parties would soon unite under the slogan “SIR Go Back,” alleging that the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were trying to undermine the voting rights of the poor.
He also alleged that the BJP-led Union government was misusing the Election Commission of India (ECI) through the SIR process to remove genuine voters who oppose the Modi government. Revanth claimed that 13 crore names had already been deleted from electoral rolls and alleged that the number could reach 20 crore.
