Hyderabad’s ‘ghost’ sanitary workers: GHMC to be probed for false payments by inspectors

Written by : TNM Staff

The Anti-Corruption Bureau has been receiving several corruption related complaints against the Hyderabad municipal corporation’s sanitary inspectors and supervisors, just as the ministry of municipal administration and urban development ordered a probe into the corruption in department.

Even before introducing the recent online system for recording attendance and payment of salary to workers, several complaints have been received stating that the inspectors record more number of workers in a ward than there were on the ground. It is alleged that the ‘ghost’ workers’ salaries goes into the pocket of the sanitary inspectors.

Deccan Chronicle reported that:

A source from the department said, “Before the introduction of online system, workers used to receive their salary in cash. The salary which was earlier Rs 6,500 has been raised to Rs 12,500. The supervisors also earn money from approving trade licence and bulk garbage collection fee. A sanitary inspector plays a major role in appointing sweepers on contract. A percentage of the sweepers’ salary goes to the inspector. Their illegal earnings need to be probed.”

Last year, an ACB team raided sanitary inspector V. Krupadanam’s house at Alwal and seized Rs 3 crores worth of assets including gold, cash, and documents related to his properties.

During the search documents for two G+2 residential houses, seven house plots and 12 acres of agriculture land, net cash of Rs 1.30 lakh, bank records of about Rs 3.80 lakh, 500 gram gold and 500 gram silver, one car and two two-wheelers were found from the house of sanitary supervisor of the GHMC.
