Written by : TNM Staff

Traffic restrictions will be in place in Hyderabad on Tuesday due to the 'Sadar Utsav Mela', an annual festival organised by the Yadav community in the city, which showcases buffaloes from across the country.

The festivities involve a procession, that starts at Musheerabad and ends at YMCA in Narayanguda.

The Hyderabad police said that in order to relieve traffic congestion and maintain smooth flow of traffic and to ensure public safety, restrictions would be in place from 7 pm on Tuesday to 5 am on Wednesday.

"Vehicular traffic will not be allowed from Kachiguda X Roads towards YMCA, Narayanaguda. It will be diverted towards Tourist Hotel instead, while traffic from Vittalwadi X Roads, will be diverted towards Ramkoti X Roads," the police said.

Commuters travelling from Rajmohallah will be diverted towards Ramkoti X Roads as well, while those heading from Reddy College to YMCA, will be diverted towards Barkatpura.

"Vehicular traffic will not be allowed from Old Barkatpura Post Office towards YMCA, Narayanaguda. It will be diverted either towards Crown Café or Lingampally. Vehicular traffic will not be allowed from the Old Excise Office lane towards YMCA, Narayanaguda. It will be diverted towards Vittalwadi," the police added.

Those travelling from Brilliant Grammar School, near the Narayanaguda Flyover, will be diverted towards Narayanaguda X Roads.

"General public are requested to avoid above roads and take alternate routes to reach their destination and cooperate with the Traffic Police," the police advisory stated.

Sadar Utsav Mela, also known as Dunnapothula panduga, is held annually, two days after Deepavali.

Buffaloes from across the country are brought to Hyderabad and are often garlanded and decorated, before being paraded through the streets. The procession is accompanied by percussionists, who play music for the participants to dance.

The star attractions this year, according to media reports, are Sartaj and Shahenshah, two buffaloes from Haryana, who weigh around 1,600kg and 2,000kg respectively.

The Sadar Utsav Mela was said to have begun in the 1940s and has been held in Hyderabad since.
