Residents under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation's (GHMC) area will soon receive water from the Godavari river as the drinking water project phase-I is almost complete.

According to a report in the Times of India, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has completed over 90 percent of works, including laying of pipelines and constructing service reservoirs and other works.

"On Sunday, the Godavari treated water has reached Ghanpur around 30 km away from the city. From there, the treated water will reach Shamirpet reservoir and from there Godavari water will be supplied through ring main-I and ring main-II," HMWS&SB director-operations, G Rameshwar Rao told the newspaper, adding that the water should reach the city by November 31.

A report in The New Indian Express adds:

With the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) conducting the trial run of 150 MLD Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR) at Ghanpur near Shamirpet, about 25-30 km away from the city, the path has been cleared for the city to receive Godavari water.

The Telangana government has been directing Godavari water towards its capital, in the backdrop of the Manjeera river drying up and the water in the SIngur reservoir going below the dead storage level due to a lack of rains in the state.

Once the Godavari project starts pumping drinking water, the city’s water supply which is already receiving water from the Krishna phase-3 project, will get a major boost with an additional 170 million gallons per day (MGD) of water.

The water board has decided to supply the Godavari water first to some areas in the city like Qutubullapur, Kukatpally , Alwal and Patancheru.
