Hyderabad’s wettest December day in 100 years: City gets 46.6mm rainfall on Thursday

The heavy rains which lashed Hyderabad on Thursday evening was the highest ever recorded rainfall on a December day in 100 years, according to the Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad.

IMD Hyderabad scientist MD Naga Ratna said that the city received 46.6 mm of rainfall on Thursday, against the previously recorded highest rainfall of 44.5 mm on December 1, 1918. Speaking to TNM, she said, "According to our data, this is the highest rainfall recorded on a day during the month of December in Hyderabad station."

Heavy rains lashed across the city on Thursday evening which led to traffic disruptions at several places, and also power outages. Officials said that Trimulgherry, Maredpally, Nampally, Himayatnagar, Asifnagar, Shaikpet received heavy rainfall.   

According to IMD, Alwal received the highest rainfall of 77.5 mm in Hyderabad, while  Hakimpet in Medchal-Malkajgiri district recorded the highest rainfall of 88.0 mm across the state, followed by Shamirpet at 55.4 m. Chennur in Mancherial district recorded the lowest rainfall of 0.4 mm in Telangana.

IMD made a forecast that the state would receive light to moderate showers for the next two days, as there is upper air trough running from north interior Karnataka to south Chhattisgarh, across Vidharba and Telangana. "There is also an upper air cyclonic circulation which lies over North interior Karnataka, as a result the state may receive light to moderate rainfall," said Raja Rao, IMD scientist.

In Telangana, Mahabubnagar district recorded the highest temperature of 32 degree Celsius on Thursday, followed by Medak and Khammam at 31 and 30 degree Celsius. Ramagundam recorded the lowest maximum temperature at 25 degrees.

Meanwhile, a depression is brewing over the Bay of Bengal which will turn into a cyclone in the next 24 hours. The cyclone, tentatively named Phetai, will cross Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada on December 17.
