Hyderabad ranks 3rd in list of most sound-polluted cities in India

Hyderabad has reportedly been ranked number three in the list of sound polluted metropolitan cities, according to figures released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Attributing this to the increasing numbers of cars, traffic jams and congestion in the city, Traffic Department, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP), Anil Kumar said that several steps were being taken.

"Sound pollution is one of the major problems in city. For that we have started campaigning against noise pollution; we have also tied up with Telecom companies through which we can give messages to common masses about the awareness," the ACP told a media outlet.

Other reports add that there were real time noise monitoring stations at different places in the city, which found that noise pollution exceeded permissible levels in various parts of the city.

In January this year, it was reported that data recorded in 11 cities and towns across Telangana including Hyderabad, Warangal and Medak, found that the air quality was above permissible levels in many places.

The IT Hub of Hyderabad, more commonly known as Cyberabad, unsurprisingly, had the highest PM10 levels.

In November 2016, the recorded PM10 levels were 17% higher than the daily standard and almost twice as much the annual standard. In 2016, the cities and towns that exceeded the annual PM10 levels by National Ambient Air Quality (NAAQ) standards included Medak, Mehboobnagar, Adilabad and Hyderabad.

This development comes even as Hyderabad was ranked the best city in India to live for the fourth continuous year, according to Mercer's Quality of Living rankings 2018.

Hyderabad ranked 142 in the list of all the countries in the world, sharing a spot with Pune. While Pune was ranked 151 last year, Hyderabad was ranked 144. Both cities have managed to improve their quality of living.

The organisation also said that the data was largely analysed between September and November 2017.
