A 34-year-old man was killed in a freak road accident while trying to evade traffic police in Hyderabad on Sunday, April 13. The death prompted protest against the police’s alleged zealousness to collect fines endangering the safety of motorists.

The incident took place near IDPL in Balanagar where police were conducting a routine vehicle check. The deceased has been identified as Bosubabu, a resident of Roda Mistry Nagar in Shapurnagar.

According to reports, a traffic constable tried to stop him during a routine police checking. Fearing the possibility of a challan being issued for traffic violation, Bosubabu fled. While evading police, he lost control of the vehicle and fell on the road. Tragically, an oncoming RTC bus ran over him, killing him on the spot.

Angered over the tragic death, his family members gathered at the spot  and staged a protest against the police by blocking the road for over 30 minutes. As the protesters did not yield, police had to use force to disperse the crowd.

The police have filed a case of negligence against the traffic constable.

Meanwhile, after going through the CCTV footage, Gunasekhar, Medchal zone DCP (traffic) told Times of India, “We found that the constable made no effort to physically catch and stop the motorist. When he was told to stop, the motorist gave the impression that he was stopping and suddenly started his bike. While trying to evade the traffic police, he skidded and came under the rear wheels of the RTC bus.”
