In a move to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced the expansion of the city's metro rail network to Medchal and Shameerpet, on Wednesday, January 1. The two new corridors, Paradise-Medchal (23 km) and JBS-Shameerpet (22 km), will be part of Phase-II ‘B’ of the Hyderabad Metro project.

The approved corridors include a 23-kilometer line from Paradise to Medchal, connecting areas like Tadbun, Bowenpally, Suchitra Circle, Kompally, Gundlapochampally, Kandlakoya, and ORR Exit. The second corridor, stretching 22 kilometers, will run from JBS to Shameerpet, serving Vikrampuri, Karkhana, Trimulgherry, Lothakunta, Alwal, Bollaram, Hakimpet, Thomukunta, and ORR Exit.

Chief Minister Reddy, citing his familiarity with the traffic challenges in the northern suburbs as the former MP from Malkajgiri, directed Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML) Managing Director NVS Reddy to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed corridors. The DPR will then be submitted to the Centre for approval. The Chief Minister directed HAML MD to prepare the DPR within three months and seek state government approval.

The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Union government and suggested that HAML MD consult with current MP Eatala Rajender for insights and suggestions. The proposed corridors will be developed as a joint venture between the Central and State governments, similar to the ongoing Phase-II ‘A’.

Currently, the state government is awaiting approval from the Union for Phase-II ‘A’ of the project, which includes five corridors spanning 76.4 kilometers and an estimated cost of Rs. 24,269 crore. This phase aims to extend three existing corridors from the first phase. Upon completion of Phase-II, the daily ridership is projected to reach 7.96 lakh by 2028.

Hyderabad's first metro phase, covering 69 kilometers across three corridors, was constructed at a cost of Rs. 22,148 crore and currently serves approximately five lakh passengers daily. This project holds the distinction of being the largest metro rail project in the world executed under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.
