Around 200 people residing in Musinagar and Shankarnagar areas of Hyderabad have been evacuated by government officials in the past two days due to flooding in low-lying areas. The flooding was a result of Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs reaching Full Tank Level (FTL) due to heavy rains.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has evacuated people residing in the Malakpet zone. Speaking to TNM, Charminar Deputy Commissioner MK Ali said that residents from around 27 houses in Musi Nagar and 100 houses in Chaderghat have been evacuated.
“Around 100 people from Musinagar were provided shelter in a nearby community hall, while 100 others were placed in Faizi Masjid in Shankarnagar. We don’t have the exact estimate of how many were affected by the rains, as several went to stay with their relatives,” Ali told TNM.
He added that while there was flooding near Chaderghat bridge, there were no residences in the area, and evacuation wasn’t necessary.
The strong outflow from the twin reservoirs of Osmansagar and Himayat Sagar led to flooding in the Amberpet-Moosarambagh bridge, prompting a response from the GHMC. The Musi River Front Development Corporation (MRDCL) had already demolished several houses in the affected areas as part of the Musi rejuvenation project.
