A police constable, who was undergoing treatment for depression, on Saturday shot himself with his gun in Telangana's Karimnagar town, police said.

D Chandraiah, who was serving in the Armed Reserve (AR) unit of Karimnagar Police Commissionerate, shot himself, Police Commissioner VB Kamalasan Reddy said.

The constable, who came to the police headquarters in the morning, collected his gun from the arms unit and left on a two-wheeler. After covering some distance, he parked the bike and shot himself. He died on the spot.

While it was initially speculated that the constable’s weapon had misfired, police later confirmed that he had tried to kill himself.

The Times of India quoted the Commissioner saying that Chandraiah, a resident of Bavupeta village, was transferred to the district recently. He belonged to the 1995 batch and took charge earlier this month.

The TOI report adds that the armed reserve constable was depressed due to family problems.

According to reports, the Commissioner added that physical evidences, including fingerprints, shell of the bullet, SLR rifle and others were sent to Forensic Laboratory, for scientific tests.

The police officer said the reason for the suicide would be known only after an investigation.

His body was shifted for a post-mortem and a police case was registered in the one town police station.

Just last month, a police constable attempted suicide in Hyderabad’s Petlaburj area by consuming ‘ant poison’.

Irked at being repeatedly denied a leave, 27-year-old Ali consumed a substance used to kill ants, following which he was rushed to a hospital and given a stomach wash.
