The Hyderabad police on Tuesday arrested the car driver in a hit-and-run case, that had claimed the life of two-year-old Chaitra on Monday. 

Chaitra was playing near Subramanyam Colony on Monday morning, at around 8.30am, when a speeding car rammed into her in front of a shop where her parents were working.

As the accused fled the scene after the mishap, police used CCTV footage from nearby cameras, and nabbed the man, identified as B Santosh.

Based on the complaint by her parents, the Saidabad police have filed a case under Section 304(A) (Causing death by negligence).

Police also examined eyewitnesses along with the CCTV footage from a traffic junction in the area.

“One of the witnesses said that the offender was in a grey WagonR car, but he could not jot down the registration number,” Inspector of Saidabad police station, K Sattaiah, told TOI.

The police said that the vehicle was being driven by B Santhosh, who worked as a driver with an LIC agent from Lokayukta colony. 

According to reports, the mishap took place on Monday morning, as Santhosh was on his way to his employer’s house.

The accused was a licensed driver, but was found to be driving the car rashly, which resulted in the death of the toddler. He fled from the spot, as he feared that he would be thrashed by a local mob, the police said. 

The TOI report adds that the police have recovered the vehicle from the owner’s house, adding that the accused had not informed his employer about the incident.

He was produced in court, and sent to judicial remand.
