Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy inaugurated the Indiramma Illu housing scheme on Thursday, December 5. The scheme, named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was a key election promise made by the Congress in the run-up to the elections. It aims to provide housing for the marginalised communities across the state at an outlay of Rs 3,000 crore in the first phase.
Minister of Information and Public Relations Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy on Wednesday said that 4,50,000 houses would be sanctioned in the first phase of the project, with a minimum of 3,500 houses in each of the 119 constituencies. “In the next four years, the state government under A Revanth Reddy will give Rs 5 lakh financial assistance to each beneficiary. All eligible people from marginalised communities will get the houses under this scheme.” He also added that the “poorest among the poor” would get benefits first, followed by others.
A budget of 3,000 crores has been sanctioned to implement the scheme’s first phase. Officials are expected to visit the applicants for the verification process from Friday.
A committee with village secretaries and mandal level officers was formed to select the beneficiaries for the Indiramma Illu scheme. Applications can be registered via the Indiramma app, after filling the personal details such as Aadhar number and income details. Officials would then visit the applicant’s house and verify the details to ensure credibility and then select the beneficiaries.
People who already own lands would be given financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh rupees while those without lands would be granted land along with the financial assistance. The state government hopes to benefit disabled persons, agricultural labourers, landless labourers, sanitation workers and people from tribal communities in the first phase.
Revanth Reddy has announced that they would seek funds from the Union government for the scheme. In October, Srinivas Reddy met the secretary of the Union Housing Ministry to discuss the allocation of funds. Revanth has also instructed the government officials to make sure the mobile application is error-free and promised no political interference in the construction of houses.
