In the second such incident in the city within a week, an alleged overdose of anesthetic has left a five-year-old undergoing a thumb corrective surgery, in a coma.

S Sumathri was undergoing the surgery at a private hospital in Hyderabad but did not regain consciousness after the operation, following which the doctors have advised the parents to take her to a centre with better facilities.

Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Dr Subash, who conducted the surgery, said:

“I had done the hip corrective surgery for the child and they came back to me for the correction of fingers. When we evaluated her before the surgery, she was healthy but the risks of complications due to anesthesia cannot be ruled out. These complications of going into coma were explained to the family via video counselling. I have been going every day to see the child and am monitoring her situation. Her condition has deteriorated."

Sumathari’s father Satyanarayana told DC, "My daughter was healthy and all the tests had shown that she could bear the anesthesia. The doctors gave her higher dosage, due to which she lapsed into coma...We trusted the doctor as he told us that the child as healthy and fit for surgery. How can they now tell us that things can go wrong?”

This follows another incident in the city where a 36-year-old woman collapsed into a deep coma with 70 per cent irreversable brain damage after failure during an IVF treatment.

The woman's husband lodged a complaint against the five doctors involved in the procedure.
