9-year-old Ramya, who was left brain dead after a drunk engineering student crashed into her family’s car, has died.

After being on ventilator for over a week, since the crash on July 1, Ramya died on Saturday around 6.47 pm. Hospital authorities will now take steps to conduct a post mortem on Ramya’s body.

The day of the accident was Ramya’s first at St. Ann’s School in West Maredpally. Her whole family – parents, grandfather, and two uncles – had gone to pick her up. But on the way back, a car fell onto their vehicle after colliding with a road median.

The person driving the car that fell onto Ramya’s family’s vehicle was an engineering student named Shravil (20) who was allegedly drunk at the time. Shravil, a student of Keshav Memorial Engineering College, had consumed alcohol at a bar before getting behind the wheel of his friend’s car. Shravil has been arrested for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Ramya’s uncle died on the spot while she suffered a pelvic injury and slipped into a coma. Initially Ramya was rushed to NIMS but as her condition deteriorated she was shifted to Care Hospital in Banjara hills on the same day. Her mother and grandparents were being treated in Yashoda Hospital.

Hyderabad police have written to the Excise Commissioner against the bar which served alcohol to people below the age of 21. Hyderabad Police Commissioner M Mahender Reddy told the media on Sunday that the police would take measures to prevent such incidents in future.
