Written by : TNM Staff

Fifteen students staying in AKM Hostel in Hyderabad’s Kachiguda area had to be hospitalised when they fell ill after eating food served in the hostel mess. The students are said to be stable and recovering.

The 15 children all fell sick after they ate food that was served in the hostel mess on Saturday evening and had to be rushed to the city’s Niloufer Hospital. Dr Ranjith, DMO and Assistant Professor on duty, stated that all the children are now stable and are undergoing treatment for food poisoning.

After eating their evening meal at the hostel mess on Saturday, the children began presenting with stomach pain, nausea and vomiting. They were admitted to Niloufer Hospital where doctors diagnosed them with food poisoning and began giving them the treatment accordingly. Doctors at the hospital confirmed that the children are faring better now and will be discharged soon.

Further investigations are underway to understand what was wrong with the food served in the hostel mess and what led to so many children falling ill. Food poisoning can occur when food is not cooked properly or if it is spoilt.

In a similar incident, in November last year, around 40 girls from a hostel in Telangana’s Suryapet were admitted to the hospital after they contracted food poisoning from food served at the hostel. All the girls were stabilised, given adequate treatment and made a full recovery. Following this, the doctors discharged all the girls. Furthermore, a team of doctors was sent to the hostel to determine what caused the girls to fall ill and to advise everyone at the hostel about taking appropriate measures against the same occurring again. A team of medical personnel, including doctors, had also set up a camp at the hostel under the guidance of the Deputy DMHO, Dr P Venkatramana, to screen other girls and to monitor the situation.
