A 13-year-old schoolgirl from Hyderabad hung herself at her home on Thursday night after she was allegedly scolded by her teacher for bringing a cell phone to school.

The victim has been identified as Ravalika, a class 8 student from St. Jude’s High School in the Erragadda area. She was a resident of Nandanagar in the same area.

“On Thursday, her classmates informed the teacher about her carrying a mobile phone in the school even when it is not allowed. After this, the teacher questioned her and asked her to hand over the phone. Later, her parents were also informed about this,” said Inspector Waheeduddin of SR Nagar police station.

That same night, when she was with her brother Radha Krishna, she apparently asked him to go out. While she was alone at home, she committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling.

“We are suspecting that she was upset about the whole incident that happened in the school. We have booked a case under section 174 of CrPC under unnatural death, while the investigation is still going on,” he added.

With technology playing an important role in our lives, more and more students are feeling attracted to mobile phones.

According to a study conducted by Common Sense Media, 50% of the teens feel they are addicted to their mobile devices, while 59% of the parents also feel the same.

Another study conducted by International Journal of Innovative Research in 2013, shows that nearly 75% of Indian teens aged between 12-17 have cell phones.

The study also reveals that more than 50% of the students were at loggerheads with their parents because of talking late nights over mobile phones.
