A 36-year-old pregnant woman, who was pushed off a moving train by a molester, has suffered a miscarriage. The woman, a native of Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh, had been living in Tiruppur with her husband and young son. A tailor by profession, she was four months pregnant and was travelling to visit her mother in Chittoor. She boarded the Coimbatore-Tirupati Intercity Express alone on Thursday, February 6 night.
While she was on the train, a 31-year-old man identified as Hemaraj from the Pooncholai village in Vellore, tried to sexually assault her. When she resisted his advances and screamed for help, he allegedly pushed her out of the moving train near KV Kuppam. The injured woman, who suffered fractures in her limbs and a head injury, was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Vellore.
According to reports, the woman suffered damage to the placenta anterior, which ultimately led to the miscarriage. The Chennai division of the Southern Railway has announced a compensation of Rs 50,000. The woman is said to be stable and undergoing treatment.
Investigations have revealed that Hemaraj is a repeat offender and was out on conditional bail after being charged in the murder of a 29-year-old woman from Chennai in April 2024. Additionally, he had a case registered against him in 2022 for allegedly pushing a commuter off a train after snatching her mobile phone. He has been detained under the Goondas Act twice before.
