WhatsApp wars: After Jayalalithaa's audio, now Karunanidhi's Pongal video

With elections round the corner, the use of social media is becoming an integral part of the political narrative in Tamil Nadu, and important announcements and statements now being released in audio-visual formats online.

Days after the Tamil Nadu floods, Jayalalithaa’s first message to the people was released on WhatsApp. And now, the grand old man of the grand old party of TN politics, M Karunanidhi, has released his Pongal wishes through a video on WhatsApp.

Addressing the people of TN, Karunanidhi said that since he could not meet people in person to wish you them a happy Pongal, he was doing so through the internet. In the personalised statement, he said that Tamil society has shown the world its strength through its festivals, and that he will continue to work for the poor like he always has.
