Veerappan’s widow Muthulakshmi has been booked by the Salem police for putting up unauthorised banners on Veerappan's 11th death anniversary.

According to a report in The New Indian Express, Muthulakshmi put up banners in Mettur, Kolathur, Karumalaikoodal and Mecheri localities on Sunday. She was booked after the Village Administrative Officers (VAOs) filed complaints for erecting banners without permission.

Earlier, Muthulakshmi, her daughter Praba, and their relatives had visited Veeappan’s grave. 

On October 13, the Kolathur police had denied Muthulakshmi permission to distribute food (Annanadanam) after which she got the go-ahead from the Madras High Court. But the court had made it clear that only food could be distributed and no other activity was permitted.

The judge had also allowed Muthulakshmi to put up banners only at the venue of the programme.

Sandalwood smuggler Veerappan was killed by a special task force in an encounter in Papparapatti in Dharmapuri district in October 2004.

When he was killed, there was already a reward of Rs. 50 lakh on his head for murder, poaching and sandalwood smuggling. His ivory smuggling was estimated at 88,000 pounds.
