The News Minute | November 27, 2014 | 9.00 am ISTThe High Court of Madras, on Wednesday, granted permission for Vaiko’s MDMK to hold a meeting at Theagaraya Nagar. The party had been denied permission to hold a meeting in Theagaraya Nagar by the police. The meeting which was to be held on November 27, a day after Martyrs’ Day, was not given permission as the police thought it would create a law and order problem. The letter seeking permission was submitted to the police department by the party on November 8 and when it did not receive any written reply but only an oral statement denying permission, it approached the High Court. The police submitted in the court that the party men may eulogize the banned LTTE and also create a law and order problem. The court did not find worth in the arguments of the state and directed the police to grant permission.In fact the judge criticized the government. "It is clear that no one has absolute faith in the right to freedom of speech and expression. People understand Article 19 (1) (a) of the Constitution to mean fundamental right to freedom of their expression and not that of others who hold a view point that cannot be tolerated by them. But, fortunately, the government and the court alone maintain consistency — the government in uniformly rejecting the requests of all groups, and the court in uniformly allowing the requests of all groups," Justice Ramasubramanium said.The party’s lawyer submitted in the court that if the party men violated any law of the land, the state could take action against them.
