Chennai airport witnessed a scare on Saturday when three suitcases were discovered lying abandoned.

The suitcases were found at three different places in the airport, including the car park area, as per a Hindu report.

Speaking to The News Minute, the airport director said that there was no major threat and nothing to worry.

Bomb disposal squad personnel arrived at the airport along with sniffer dogs and were able to retrieve the bags safely for further examination, officials of the Central Industrial Security Force said.

Vigil was stepped up at the airport following the incident.

In a similar incident in 2007, an unclaimed suitcase was found in the parking area of the airport, which had triggered similar panic.

A passerby notified the police who then arrived with the bomb disposal squad. However, no harmful materials were found on inspection.

Later, a passenger approached the police officials claiming that the suitcase belonged to him. He said that he came on a flight from Singapore to Chennai via New Delhi and one of his bags had gone missing during transportation.

After due verification, police handed over the suitcase to the passenger.
