The News Minute | August 20, 2014 | 09:48 am ISTLiquor prices in Tamil Nadu are all set to increase from Wednesday after a bill introduced by the government to increase the upper ceiling on excise duty on liquor was passed in the assembly. According to the new rates, introduced by the bill in the assembly on August 12, a quarter bottle (180 ml) of regular and medium brand liquor will go up by Rs. 10 while premium label prices will see an increase of Rs. 20.“The state government is expected to earn more than Rs. 750 crore by hiking liquor rates”, said a senior Tasmac official to The Times of India. The decision to increase liquor prices was reached after a dip in sales figures as revenues dropped from Rs. 21,641 in 2013-14 as against Rs. 21,680.67 during the previous year.The Government is also expected to consider an increase in the procurement price of liquor. A final announcement is yet to be made; however procurement rates have not been raised over the last seven years by the state.
