TN Governor, DMK lawmakers donate one month's salary for flood relief in Kerala

In more support pouring in for the flood-battered state of Kerala, DMK Working President MK Stalin announced on Tuesday that all DMK lawmakers would donate their one month’s salary to flood relief efforts.

Stating that this was ‘in order to lend a lending hand to the rehabilitation efforts of the state,' Stalin announced that this would include Members of the Legislative Assembly, Members of Parliament in both Houses.

On August 12, days after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Kerala, MK Stalin announced a contribution of Rs 1 crore on behalf of the party towards the Kerala Chief Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund.

A statement issued by the DMK stated that following the incessant rains and subsequent flooding in Kerala, many people have been impacted and properties worth crores have been affected. In view of the same, on behalf of the DMK, the party’s Working President MK Stalin would donate Rs 1 crore for the relief fund.

According to one report in DT Next, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit too donated his one month's salary towards flood relief.

Quoting a Raj Bhavan press release, the newspaper said, “The Governor has been greatly anguished by the hardship faced by the people and has expressed his solidarity with them through this gesture.”

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami announced that all AIADMK lawmakers would donate their monthly salary for relief and rescue work in Kerala.

On Saturday, the chief minister had announced Rs 5 crore for relief work in the state, in addition to Rs 5 crore that had already been announced on August 10. 

The Tamil Nadu government also sent various relief materials to Kerala including 500 metric tonnes of rice, 300 metric tonnes of milk powder, 15,000 litres of ultra-high temperature processed milk, veshtis, lungis, 10,000 blankets and essential medicines.

The CM also announced the immediate dispatch of medical and veterinary teams to the affected state.
